On violence against women

On Eid mornings, our tradition has been to begin the day with congratulatory phone calls and visits, celebrating the joy of the occasion together. Unfortunately, today, we awoke to the distressing news of a tragic crime.

We are grateful for the deep concern expressed by the Kurdish people and the media, which has deeply affected all of us. Thanks to the swift response of the security forces, the perpetrator was apprehended before disappearing.

But for how long? How long must we endure hearing about yet another woman's life cut short due to societal issues or in the name of so-called 'honour'? For the love of all that is sacred, what 'honour' is there in the murder of women? There is no honour in taking the life of a woman.

I want to convey a heartfelt message to those responsible for these heinous acts. I pledge that for as long as I hold this position and wherever my words reach, I will ensure you face the full force of the law. Take this to heart: I promise that I will not let you escape justice. We will pursue you relentlessly, much like we pursued the Islamic State.

Just as you show no mercy towards the women you kill, we will show no mercy towards you. I am confident that the people will stand with us, advocating for severe punishment. I believe that journalists will appreciate our unwavering commitment to bring you to justice because those who take the life of a woman deserve neither compassion nor forgiveness.

Femicide is a stain on our society, and we must all bear the weight of this shame. It is high time that we eradicate the notion of femicide from our community. To achieve this, we require the collective pressure from the Kurdish people, the vigilant eyes and articulate pens of our writers, critics, and journalists, and the impactful words of religious leaders reminding us that femicide is as forbidden as any other form of murder.

Let us fervently hope that we never witness another day like today.

May the souls of these women, whose only 'crime' was being women, rest in peace.
